Franklin Electric EV Systems Launches Inaugural Product Catering to EV Infrastructure Rollout

Aug 16, 2022

At a joint press conference including Senator Tammy Baldwin and major utility provider MG&E, Franklin Electric EV Systems today announced the introduction of its flagship NexPhase™ Smart EV Switchgear product, uniquely designed to support the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program.  NexPhase™ is an intelligent, turnkey solution that provides the electrical infrastructure needed to bridge the gap between power from the utility and electric chargers.  Neatly packed in a single, all-in-one switchgear cabinet, NexPhase™ is well suited to accelerate the rollout of Level 3 fast charger initiatives.

NEVI was derived from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law passed in 2021 which provides $5 billion dollars of funding over 5 years to develop the network of charging stations across the United States.  Over designated highways throughout the country, NEVI will provide funding to assure there is at least one Level 3 charging station every 50 miles, no more than one mile off the highway.  A Level 3 charger is referred to as a “fast charger,” that can charge an electric vehicle in about 10-15 minutes.

In order to receive NEVI funding, Level 3 chargers are required to be operational 97% of the time compared to the national average today of approximately 75%.  “Unlike any other switchgear, NexPhase™ monitors and controls power before it reaches the chargers.  This enables remote monitoring, troubleshooting, and control of the EV chargers to help ensure uptime,” according to Mark Seitz, Sr. Business Unit Manager for EV Systems at Franklin Electric.  “NexPhase marks our entry product that is fit-for-purpose to help accelerate deployment of fast chargers throughout the country. Our company has invested heavily in a state-of-the-art research and development environment with additional products to come on the heels  of NexPhase,” continued Seitz.

“Franklin Electric is a great example of a business that is paving the way for a greener future while creating jobs right here in Wisconsin,” said Sen. Baldwin.

For more than 30 years the Madison, Wisconsin facility of Franklin Electric has been providing innovative products, services, and system solutions for the monitoring of critical devices that protect human health and the environment, while delivering the lowest total cost of ownership.  Our products make a difference in industries such as retail petroleum, telecommunications, data centers, and electric utilities.
